Description: Chloroplast is found in plant cells and some bacteria. Chloroplasts are organelles that capture the energy from sunlight and convert it into chemical energy in a process called photosynethis. Like mitochondrion chloroplast are surrounded by membranes. Also, inside the organelle there is a green pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a pigment in plants and other photosynthetic organisms, basically it captures light enery.
Chloroplast Membrane:The outside of the chloroplast is made up of 2 types of membranes and the inside is made up of one. The outside contains the outside membrane and the inside membrane. The outer membrane is smooth and is freely permeable to molecules. The inside membrane is smooth and contains many transporters. The inner most membrane is a system of thylakoid membranes. The thylakoid membrane encloses a lumen, which is a system of vesicles.
Function:The main function of chloroplast is to produce energy using sunlight. This process of forming energy from sunlight, called photosynthesis. Photosynethis is the process in which plants use the energy of sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into high energy carbohydrates- sugars and starches and oxygen.
Interesting Facts:
- Chloroplast was first discovered by Mereschkowsky in 1905.
- Chloroplast has its own DNA.
- The Endosymbiont theory is a theory in which the chloroplast became a part of the cell.
- The space inside the chloroplast is called the stroma.
- The stroma may contain starch grains and lipid bodies.
